Margaret “Kate” Barry

While Margaret Barry is now widely known as “Kate Barry”, she may have been known as “Peggy” as she was referenced as such in her husband’s will.

Margaret “Kate” Barry, daughter of Charles and Mary Moore, was born in Anson, South Carolina on November 29, 1752. She was the wife of Captain Andrew Barry and mother to nine children. The family settled about two miles from Walnut Grove Plantation in Spartanburg. A revolutionary war heroin, Kate Barry volunteered to warn the Patriot forces of impending danger. She was known to be an excellent horsewoman and knew the land of her family plantation better than anyone. She passed in Salem, New Jersey on September 29, 1823. She also can be found in the family cemetery at Walnut Grove.
